Brunch in the city: Industry Beans (York St, Sydney)

I recently caught up with a dear friend for weekend brunch in the city. We live on opposite sides of the city so usually try to meet in the middle so that neither of us have to travel too far. We don't work in the city either, so I had to do a quick google search for weekend brunch recommendations in the CBD. My mission was to find great coffee as well substantial food, not just pastries and cakes. Secondly, we were coming by train so ideally close to either Town Hall or Wynyard Stations. And thirdly, it had to be open on a weekend! (Many cafes in the CBD seem to be closed on weekends, unless it's in a famous tourist landmark like QVB or Westfield Shopping Centre it seems).

Industry Beans -  Bubble Coffee (AUD $7.00) - Super delicious icy cold milk coffee with small tapioca pearls and a regular flat white ($5.50)

The cafe has a Scandi industrial minimalist vibe. They only take walk ins. The cafe was full, and we were the second group in line on a Sunday at 12 pm but luckily tables moved quickly so it felt like a short 10 minute wait which passed by quickly while we looked at the menu deciding what to order.

According to their website, Industry Beans was founded by two brothers who opened their first coffee roastery and cafe in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Since then, they've opened several venues in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Location: 38-40 York St, Sydney CBD NSW 2000, very close to QVB and Myer in Sydney City

Industry Beans popped up in a couple of online recommendations and currently has a 4.4 google star rating from over 1000 reviews. It's conveniently located about one block from QVB/Myer and an easy walking distance from Town Hall Station. Most importantly, it's open til 3:30pm on a Sunday! After looking through the menu online, I decided there were more than a few dishes I'd happily try out on the day and so it was decided.

Coffee and drinks menu

My friend was curious about their 'Bubble Coffee' and I am so glad that she ordered it for us to try. I love my Asian style bubble teas but this was a refined and elevated version. We had the original flavour, which essentially tasted like a creamy iced coffee with small tasty sago-sized tapioca pearls that have been soaked in coffee. You can also try it in salted caramel, pandan or matcha flavours too. If you don't like your drinks overly sweet ask for less sugar, which was what my friend did and I think it turned out just the right amount of sweetness. I ordered my usual go-to coffee which is a skinny flat white, which I also enjoyed thoroughly.

One of their signature brunch dishes: Porcini Nest AUD $29 - porcini dusted egg, potato nest, wild mushroom duxelle, kale, picked mushrooms and truffle oil.

For food we ordered two mains to share from the signature brunch menu - the Porcini Nest and Coffee Rubbed Wagyu Burger. Both dishes were great but the wagyu burger really hit the spot for me. It's a brioche bun burger and cooked oh-so juicily with the right amount of seasoning, sauce and pickles. Each bite was a soft fluffy delight of tangy and sweet. You can see in the photo that the burger patty was cooked to tender perfection. The burger came with a side of sweet potato curls, or you can add potato chips on the side.

Another signature brunch dish: Coffee rubbed wagyu burger AUD $27.
Honestly one of the tastiest burgers I've had for along time.

The Porcini Nest looked impressive in the photos and was interesting to eat. The nest is made of crunchy thin potatoes and that was probably the tastiest bit. Truffle lovers might like the truffle flavour of this dish, but I feel like I wouldn't have minded just a teeny bit more chunkier mushroom to sink my teeth into.

Coffee rubbed wagyu burger - with chilli jam, cheddar, pickled zucchini and brioche bun.
Super tender and juicy. I wish I didn't have to split the burger with my friend to share! Will definitely be coming back to order this one again.

Selection of pastries and toasted sandwiches also available

Overall, this is a cafe that I would come back for the good coffee, energetic vibe and the wagyu burger. I'd also love to try the corn fritters on the brunch menu that we didn't get to try this time. So if you're looking for a weekend brunch spot right in the centre of the city, you might want to give this place a visit.
