Hunt for a NYE dress: Myer try ons

Anyone else looking forward to New Year's Eve as much as I am? I've always loved the excitement of NYE - the midnight countdown, fireworks, the prospect of fresh beginnings, new resolutions and who knows what the new year might bring! To me it also feels like one of the most romantic times of the year - squishing in the crowd with your boy (or your crush that you wish would turn into your boyfriend), waiting to countdown together and then that new year's kiss at the stroke of midnight. However, for this year I would not recommend going out so that you can avoid large crowds and not catch Covid. Instead, we are planning to have a small party at home with one or two guests each but that doesn't mean that I can't dress up for the occasion at home!

For anyone who gets as excited about NYE as me (or about getting dressed up in general), I spotted some sparkly and spectacular dresses at Myer's today. I didn't have much time to browse everything so I may need to head back to the shops for a second (or third) hunt, but here I'll share the four that looked like great outfit options for NYE. You could probably even wear these dresses on other occasions throughout the year as well! #versatiledressing

1. Mossman 'One Desire' dress in peach, also available in mint green

Absolutely loved this dress. It's a one shoulder top with a poofy shoulder. This is not usually my style, but I absolutely loved it on me. It's a peachy orange colour, mini dress length without being too short. The material is stretchy and has a side zipper closure. I could only find a size 10 on the rack (I'm usually  a size 6) but this was not too baggy surprisingly. I suspect that this dress may run small. If you are in between sizes would recommend to size up.

I would style this with a gold chain necklace and stiletto heels in gold, silver, white, black or yellow. Could totally re-wear this dress for say a wedding occasion or other fancy do.

2. Forever New Juniper Sequin Wrap Mini Dress

What better way to spend NYE than shimmering all night glamorously in a sequin dress? In terms of this sequin dress from Forever New, there is a back zipper closure and the dress also has some stretch, mostly at the waistline where it's elasticised. There are tiny shoulder pads which gives the dress a bit of structure as the rest of it is flowy. The sleeves may be a tad long on me, but because of the loose fit of the dress as a whole, it's not noticeable at all. 

This dress would be perfect for cooler weather (such as if you're heading overseas to the northern hemisphere to celebrate) or if you're having a civilised dinner or party, preferably with air con. Because of the long sleeves, I think it may get rather hot particularly if you're planning on going out partying. I also have no idea whether you'd be able to put this in your washing machine, so may be safer having to take it to the drycleaners.

This is another cute sparkly number. It's a wrap dress style with elasticised waist and waist tie. I don't have quite enough cleavage to pull this one off, as you can see it's a big baggy around the chest area but this is a great option if you're after something a little less pricey and in gold sequins. I'm wearing my usual size (size 6). I can't seem to find this online at the moment, so you may need to try in store. Otherwise they have many gorgeous dresses available online - see here.

4. Forever New Body Con Frill Hem Dress

In case you're stuck for outfit ideas and unsure of what to wear, you can never go wrong with wearing a little black dress for a party. This one is from Forever New and is fairly simple but I can see it being quite versatile including being worn to the office with a shirt on top, cardigan, suit jacket or even a jumper.

To show what I mean, I put a t-shirt over the dress and did the hack where you tie a hairtie and twist the end of the t-shirt inwards to shorten it. You can also do the same trick for sweaters and jumpers too, and then the dress simply looks like a little black flippy skirt.

In terms of the dress itself, it's a singlet style with spaghetti straps and a form fitting skirt with a frill hem. Surprisingly, there were no zippers but the dress is described as body con so overall very stretchy. The shoulder straps are not adjustable either. The length is like mini dress length, but on my 150 cm height was just perfect as a short dress without being too short. I am trying on the size 8 here in the photo, but it felt like a reasonable fit so again I wonder if the sizing may run small (or alternative explanation would be that I've put on Covid weight and have gone up one clothing size this year without realising, oh dear!). 

Lastly... for those of you who are not in the mood for shopping or are saving up your budget (always wise), remember that you can always look at what's in store or online at the moment for fashion inspiration then take a look in your own closet to see if you have something similar or whether you could  put together new outfits with similar old items. Like I mentioned above, you can never go wrong with a little black dress and it's certainly worth the investment having a good one that you can wear on repeat by simply adding different accessories to change the look for whatever occasion you're getting dolled up for. Another good classic to have handy in closet is a black singlet, an off the shoulder top or one shoulder top in a nice material. Simply add your favourite skirt or even pair of jeans with a pair of heels and voila, you're party ready.
